Women, your day has come! International Women’s Day 2016!

What is International Women’s Day?

International Women’s Day is celebrated every year on 8th March. The day is a used a general celebration of women as a mark of respect and to celebrate their accomplishments. International Women’s Day is also used to celebrate gender equality. This celebration started in the early 20th century and has only increased in popularity. China and Russia even declare it an official holiday for women. In some countries IWD has the equivalent status of Mother’s Day where children give small presents to their mothers and grandmothers. According to the official IWD website ‘No one government, NGO, charity, corporation, academic institution, women’s network or media hub is solely responsible for International Here’s whats going on:

6th of March – Fabulous Feminine Pub Quiz The first event will be kicking on in the JC’s with the Feminist Society and the Women’s Officer The quiz will be focusing on women achievements and testing your knowledge of history of women! There will be prizes for the first and second team. Proceeds will also be going to women’s aid.

7th of March – Meet your Women’s Officer Come and grab a free tea or coffee with your women’s officer! You can chat to her about any Women Campaigns or ideas you may have or simply introduce yourself and grab some free beverages! She will be available from 9-10am in JC’s on Coffee Side.

8th of March – Women’s Fayre! With the fantastic help from the Helping Hands Society combined with the Women’s Officer to celebrate IWD! It will also function as a fundraiser as one of the charities we support in Ghana are looking to launch a new project that aims to teach young women/ single mothers skills they can use to provide for their family. Stalls include the Game of Thrones Society and The Live Music Society! So come along and grab some music, and see what you can learn! 12-3 in DIVA’s.

14th of March – IWD Cake sale All proceeds will be going towards a women’s charity – 10am-1pm, Front of Fulton House, opposite Santander.
