what world am i living in?

Donald Trump is the 45th president of the United States of America, Brexit wins, far right movements across Europe are rising and winning because of economic decline and the increase of people feeling dissatisfied with their lives. The call is to blame immigrants, blacks, LGBT+, women, the disabled, Muslims and Jews.

A lot of people say other factors are involved but immigration was the primary cause of Brexit. You can look up what Trump said about minorities and hopefully be disgusted by what you find. Other people thought it was a brilliant rhetoric; banning Muslims would mean no terrorism, get the immigrants out means more jobs and fewer rapists. The blacks can no longer whinge about their lives mattering. No more feminism. For some people this kind of illogical and racist thinking made them go to the polls and vote for Trump. I did cry a little after the results were announced, wondering what I personally have done to be so hated just because of the colour of my skin.

We are not living in a post-racism society. In my opinion we have never been. The recent elections show that for themselves. What can we do? Do we just sit and feel sorry for ourselves. No, people like Donald Trump and Nigel Farage want us to feel less just because we do not fit their idea of people who deserve rights. I for one, will not let people like them steal my joy, make me apologise for my identity or even let me live in fear. People have fought too hard for us to celebrate ourselves and live with rights in society. I have the right to be treated as a human being, and I will enjoy that right to the best of my ability.

These are terrifying times for minorities. What can we do but organise, fight for our rights and hope and pray that we will be safe. We do not know what will happen to us, there is no longer a security of civil liberties for minorities living in western democracies. The far right support and hatred towards us is astonishing. But like I said, we have to try and live happily. We must fight so hard for our right to a safe and happy life. We cannot let the Trumps and Farages of the world win.
