The lead up to varsity can be a very stressful and straining time for the Swansea University Ladies varsity squad. Having a well thought out pre-varsity schedule is essential. Increasing the intensity and quantity of training sessions is important along with balancing these with timely recovery sessions. This year the team had the added difficulty of having to play league matches on weekends as well as these intense sessions so the possibility of over training was at an all-time high. Educating the squad on the correct foods to eat so that their diets enable them to train and perform at their optimum was necessary. This being said it can be argued that what happens off the pitch is as important as what happens on it. Team bonding sessions were integrated in the training plan to support the players mentally and to optimise team cohesion.
